Raining Cotton Balls

As scientist, we learn that making predictions and finding the actual results teaches us important information. In this lesson, students made predictions for how many drops of water it would take to make their cloud rain.  Next, they had to explain how the parts of the water cycle were demostrated in this experiment. 

Composting:

First graders were learning about compost and how they could help the Earth. After reading a story, students had to sort items into piles of things that could go into a compost pile or not. 

Friction!

5th graders tested different surfaces to see which allowed their dragon to travel the farthest. Friction played a huge part in how far their dragon moved! 

Volcanoes!

4th graders have been learning about changes to Earth's surface (fast and slow processes). We watched a short Discovery Education clip on the three types of volcanoes and then the kids worked in groups to build a volcano. We used math to measure the diameter and height of the volcanoes. After we erupted the volcanoes, students measured the flow of "lava" that erupted. The activity was so much to teach the kids about landforms. 

Gobstopper Erosion

Who knew learning about weathering and erosion could be so much fun! 4th graders weathered away Gobstoppers and saw the different colored layers that were present. The activity was a great learning experience to see how weathering occurs. 

Landforms!

4th graders have been researching different landforms and learning about how they were made. After researching, students constructed their landform out of clay and will create a poster with their landforms information. Here's our work in progress..

Aluminum Boats

In second grade, students have been discussing why certain objects float while others sink. In this activity, students designed a boat to sustain weight. They predicted how many marbles their boat could hold. The winner for today...27 marbles!
